of me wanted a deeper "scientific" explanation that gave me a "Laws of Motion"
proof behind their swing techniques.
This lead me to searching for an explanation of the "physics" behind the golf swing. I thought,
surely, any system that moves can be explained by the “laws of motion”.
My search turned up material that
falls into two categories. Both of which I found unsatisfactory.
The first is so general that it
gives no more explanation than the "how they swing" articles in the golf
magazines and books.
The second is so technically over
complex that the average golfer would have no clue about what was being
described and is generally written by authors who know very little about the
techniques of the swing to provide any practical guidance.
This nagging need for a
satisfactory explanation drove me to do my own analysis.
I applied simple physics to the different areas of motion where energy could be generated in the
swing from the ground up. I reviewed the mechanics of the swing as an organic
system of levers, joints and motors, just as I would analyzing any other
mechanical system.
I was completely amazed at the
outcome and I am kicking myself for not going through this exercise years
earlier! It turned my thinking on the golf swing completely on its head and has
altered my methods for teaching golf.
Not only was I clear on where
power was generated in the swing, but the bigger realization that hit me was
just "how much power" in the swing could
be
lost due to physical restrictions of the body that most golfers totally
overlook.

was also this further realization.
The trends in the golf industry are driving
the average golfer to seek more distance by slogans such as "swing like the
pros" which is sending the wrong message and encouraging golfers to swing well
beyond their physical capabilities.

of creating more energy in their swings they are doing the opposite!
